We spent the best Mother’s day ever this year at the ITC Sonar that organised a special Sunday brunch for Kolkata Food Bloggers to mark the occasion. We were invited along with our moms and how we absolutely loved this thoughtful gesture. I for one was glad it gave me and mom some girlie time together and away from the boys at home (who were all jealous below their stoic pretense). Archita and Manjari was there as well; our moms connected like long lost friends and the table was filled with happy chatter in no time.
The Sunday brunch spread at ITC was very impressive – from a vast array of salads and breads to traditional Bengali and Rajasthani items to continental fare, there was something for everyone here. I was especially mighty impressed with the elaborate salad section, they had a good mix of mediterranean, European and Indian inspired salads and aperitifs to choose from. I love the idea of the DIY salads where one could pick their choice of seafood – with tuna, squids, crab meat and octopus laid out separately with a choice of seasonings – I found this is especially useful for people with specific allergies because they can control what to pick for their salad.

Although I could not sample the entire spread from the main course, I was bowled over by the yummy and tender kosha mangsho that went equally well with the Rajasthani pulao as with the Dhakai Chicken biryani. Despite battling for space in my tummy, I tucked in a lobster thermidor that looked so inviting.

The dessert section was equally alluring, again ITC thoughtfully included sugar free desserts – for someone like me with diabetic parents, this was so much welcome. Once again, this section had a good mix of Indian and continental desserts and there was something for every palate. Although I have to say, it was slightly more biased towards chocolate lovers, but I am part of that majority who think there can never be too much chocolate.

The Sunday brunch experience at ITC comes replete with entertainment – live music (with a great songlist and very talented performers), impressive magic tricks, balloon art and face painting and cookie making activities to keep the kids energised throughout the afternoon. I have always loved ITC Sonar”s natural and homely environment, the serenity of the calm exteriors and the hospitality go hand in hand in making you feel at home and privileged at the same time. The Sunday brunch is priced at Rs 1850+ taxes and the menu changes every week.

I am thankful to ITC for giving us a wonderful afternoon and for bringing a smile on my mom’s face. I can totally see us heading for another brunch with the boys very soon.
